Chai Spiced Cupcakes

Who isn’t chai obsessed? Okay maybe not as many people as I think, but I am one of those people. Starbucks, Caribou, off the wall cafes you can catch me ordering a Chai Late. I know that those aren’t the greatest for you in terms of calories but, honestly I love them too much to not spoil myself every now and then.

These cupcakes are actually pretty easy to make but, there are a few ingredients that you wouldn’t have just lying around the house. For me I had most besides the, Ground Cloves, Ground Ginger, and Cardamom. Most you can find at the local grocery store, but I had to order my Cardamom on Amazon because, I couldn’t find in at our local grocery store.

This recipe is so fun and flavorful that I made them into mini cupcakes. I am someone who gets annoyed after a couple bites with a dessert flavor and I think mini cupcakes are just the right amount of flavor and size.

For this recipe you will need:


1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon cardamom

1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

1/8 teaspoon black pepper

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup butter at room temperature

1 egg

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

2/3 cups milk

Start by combining  cardamom, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and black pepper in a small bowl. Then set aside.

Net in a larger bowl, mix together the sugar and the butter until light and fluffy. Then beat in the egg and vanilla. Make sure it’s all combined, so scrape the sides of the bow if need be.

In another bowl combine the flour, salt, baking powder and the 1 1/2 teaspoons of the reserved spice mix. Alternate adding the flour mixture and the milk.

Fill your muffin tins 2/3 full and bake from 18-20 minutes at 350 degrees (mine took around 24 minutes), or until the tester comes out clean. Then let cool completely.


1/2 cup butter at room temperature

3 1/2 cups powdered sugar

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 tablespoons of milk


To make this frosting, start in a large bowl, and beat butter until fluffy . Slowly beat in the powdered sugar (I did a 1/2 cup at a time), vanilla, and the remaining spice mixture. Once that is mixed add enough milk until you reach the consistency you want. Pipe the frosting onto the cupcakes and if you would like, sprinkle the cinnamon over the frosted cupcakes.

This recipe is so fun and I really think you all should give it a try at home whether you’re bored, have a brunch coming up, or just love chai as much as I do!
